Our Mission

Tanzania is legendary. This East African nation is home to Africa’s most iconic sites, including Mount Kilimanjaro and the Serengeti. But despite its natural and human resources, Tanzania is a poor country, with a majority of its nearly 70 million citizens surviving on $3 per day or less.

With half its population under age 18, education is critical for Tanzania’s development. Sadly, only one-third of young people complete secondary school, and fewer than 5% go on to vocational training or college.

Godparents for Tanzania offers hope to young Tanzanians by sending them to secondary school, vocational training, and college. Providing scholarships is a simple but powerful approach that transforms the lives of students, their families, and their nation.

Our Community

With the love and financial support of individuals and churches, Godparents for Tanzania has sponsored 220 young Tanzanians in secondary school, vocational training, and college.

Our graduates are at work across Tanzania as teachers, doctors, nurses, lawyers, wildlife conservation officers, and entrepreneurs. They have raised the standard of living for themselves and their families.

Even as we celebrate two decades of changing lives, we know that education is a luxury many cannot afford. Help us give more young Tanzanians the opportunity to go to school, reach their potential, and serve their communities.

Our History

Our story began in 1995, when Pastor Dwayne Westermann visited Tanzania for the first time. He was befriended by Pastor Yotham Baha, and together they traveled across the country’s Kilimanjaro and Arusha regions. Everywhere they went, they found the same need; too many intelligent, motivated young Tanzania students were unable to continue their education beyond primary school.

Back in the U.S., Pastor Westermann arranged sponsorships for a few students; but he and Pastor Baha were eager to help many more. Friends and family were recruited to join the effort, and in 2004 Godparents for Tanzania was established.
